News: Toshiba to Throw in HD DVD Towel?

The Hollywood Reporter is quoting ‘very reliable sources,’ that Toshiba, the company that invented, and has made the most dramatic push for HD DVD is close to officially dropping the format.

The article cites the selling of players at a loss and the defection of such companies as Warner Bros. to the Blu-Ray camp as the reason for the possible decision. An announcement could come in a matter of weeks.
A spokesperson for Toshiba said, ‘Toshiba will continue to study the market impact and the value proposition for consumers, particularly in light of our recent price reductions on all HD DVD players.’

Which doesn’t mean they’re denying the story.
