Oscar winner Pedro Almodovar has optioned screen adaptation rights to the memoirs of Marcos Ana. Ana, now 88, was a communist poet jailed for 23 years by Francisco Franco’s regime. Almodovar is expected to pen the screenplay within the year, but is unlikely to shoot the film for some time.

Almodovar is probably the most internationally acclaimed Spanish direct since Luis Bunuel. He has won a Best Original Screenplay Oscar for his film “Talk To Her.” In May, Almodovar will shoot “Los Abrazos Rotos,” (aka “Broken Hugs”), starring Oscar nominee Penelope Cruz.
