Editorial: 35th Oscars Anniversary

I know what you’re thinking: It’s the 80th anniversary! I know this, but follow me for a second. It was 35 years ago this year that Marlon Brando famously sent up Sacheen Littlefeather to refuse his Best Actor award for his work on ‘The Godfather’ and read a 15 page speech on the mistreatment of Native Americans by the entertainment industry through stereotypical depiction. Of course she was still only allowed 45 seconds to speak so she was forced to do a brief sum-up. A commendable action by Mr. Brando (though he was definitely roasted for it by members of Hollywood). He and Ms. Littlefeather helped further the cause of Native Americans by giving them a voice on the biggest stage in Hollywood … then she went ahead and did a Playboy spread and set womens right’s back 35 years (For research purposes I looked up the issue she was in. To be clear I only read Playboy for the articles. And the bazoombas and woohoos. And not so much the articles which only take up space where they could put more boobies.).

I hope this year someone celebrates the 35th anniversary in a similar fashion. If I had to put money on it, I’d say George Clooney sends up someone named Tammy Felter to talk about global warming and then three days later we hear she is a prostitute. Like you wouldn’t watch that.
