‘Ultimate Band’ from Disney

The House that Mouse built is entering the market that was perfected by Guitar Hero, and made even better by Rock Band. Disney’s video game unit announced the Nintendo exclusive on Wednesday. Ultimate Band rather then using an new controller, would rather use the existing Wiimote and DS.

“We thought we could do a very compelling music title just using the mechanics of the Wii controller,” said senior game designer Derek Dutilly to Variety. “We think of it as more of a game and less of a simulation.”

Songs already lined up include “Steady as She Goes” by the Raconteurs, the Who’s “My Generation” and “Fell in Love With a Girl” by the White Stripes, all of which will be covers.

There is definitely a market for a game like this, but, I’m not sure this will directly compete with the people buying Rock Band or Guitar Hero. Part of the fun in my opinion is the simulation, this takes the existing market, and segments it for the casual/beginner gamer. Smart move on Disney’s part, no one ever said Mickey was a dumbo (ha). The game is set to hit stores in the Fall.
