Zemeckis Officially Addicted to Performance Capture

Polar ExpressOk, ‘The Polar Express’ looked creepy.  ‘Beowulf’ looked a little less creepy, but still kind of off.  Now Robert Zemeckis, paired with Walt Disney Pictures, will be doing yet another film using the CG/performance capture technology.  This time the film will be an original story called, ‘Calling All Robots.’  Not much is known about the story yet, but it is being written by Michael Dougherty whose writing credits include Bryan Singer’s ‘X2: X-Men United’ and ‘Superman Returns.’  Dougherty has stated that the story he is writing was inspired by the old Godzilla movies that he grew up on.

Zemeckis’s next film, the classic Dickens story, ‘A Christmas Carol’ will also use performance capture technology and is slated for release some time next year (probably around Christmas).

Robert really seems to want to make this performance capture thing work.  I don’t know, though.  It still looks weird/creepy to me.  It’s like the spork.  It’s not totally animation and it’s not totally live action.  And, like the spork, it’s probably going to end up being something no one uses.
