‘Speed Racer’ Loses to ‘Vegas’

The official numbers are in, and ‘Speed Racer’ loses the number 2 spot in the box office to ‘What Happens in Vegas.’ The latter took in a total of $20.2 mil domestically, with ‘Speed Racer’ totally $18.6 million, a few mil shy of WB’s end of the weekend estimates.

It doesn’t really come to a shock, as like we spoke about on last weeks LR Live, ‘Speed Racer,’ was going to be a tough sell to audiences, as it didn’t look like it could connect to kids or adults. WB, the Wachowski Brothers, and Joel Silver are no doubt sharing a couple drinks with their heads hanging low, as the film must’ve cost well over $100 million dollars to make. Not pouring salt in any wounds, but, ‘What Happens in Vegas’ had a budget around $35 million. Just sayin….

  1. The Wachowski bros certainly put a lot of effort into making Speed Racer… the movie overall looked and felt like a cross between anime, a kaleidoscope, that Flintstones movie, a video game and the Dukes of Hazard

  2. they definitely did, the big problem we were talking about on the show was the lack of an audience. It was too much for kids, and to juvenile for adults, so whose left? it was a big gamble, and unfortunately, the pair lost.
