Review: Sex and the City

Summer blockbuster filmmakers take note: Carrie Bradshaw can teach you a thing or two. Four years after riding off into the sunset, Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha are back in something that fans have been clamoring for ever since the end of the final episode: the ‘Sex and the City’ movie.

In an effort to keep the plot secret and to not ruin any surprises for fans, I’ll skip the plot summary. All you need to know that all four girls are back in the city they love and their relationships all go through tests as they live and love.

This is, in many ways, the perfect summer movie. Summer movies are always big, always something highly anticipated by fans. And, usually, fans say that the most recent movie isn’t as good as they wanted it to be. ‘Sex and the City’ is as good as you hoped you it would be.

Even the addition of Jennifer Hudson, a casting decision I was wary of, (because of the additional star power, not necessarily Hudson herself,) works. Written and directed by Michael Patrick King, the movie is the perfect continuation to the story. Obviously, as the head writer on the show, he should have a good handle on the characters, but, as we’ve seen countless times before, sometimes those who should know better don’t. (George Lucas, I’m looking at you.)

The cast is across the boards excellent. Of course, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristin Davis, Cynthia Nixon and Kim Catrall, (to say nothing of Chris Noth, David Eigenberg and Evan Handler,) have had enough time to learn every nuance of their characters. They step back into them as if it hadn’t been a day, to say nothing of four years.

I didn’t watch the show as it aired on HBO. Instead, I got into it on DVD, finding that one episode was never enough. Before you knew it, you would have watched three or four or five, unable to resist the light, airy charm that the show seemed to own the patent on. The movie is like a run of episodes of the show. And that’s about the highest praise I could offer. If you’re not a fan of the show, the movie won’t convince you. It’s more of the same. And that’s what makes it so good. -Sam
