Review: Star Trek

startrekFinally, a film that lives up to the hype. J.J. Abrams reboot of ‘Star Trek’ is one of the most fun, entertaining movies of the year. The film takes the franchise to the roots, where Captain James Kirk is a mere cadet, joining Starfleet at the beckoning of Captain Christopher Pike.

The film opens with a battle between Romulan’s and Starfleet at a black hole. The Captain is murdered by the Romulan leader Nero (an unrecognizable Eric Bana), and George Kirk (captain Kirk’s father) takes over. In an act of heroism, Kirk remains behind while evacuating the ship. This includes his wife, who is in labor. The child is born, and named James Kirk, while George goes down with the ship.

The film flashes forward 25 years, where we join James Kirk (Chris Pine) in Iowa, a hellraiser, mostly looking to start trouble. After a barfight that is stopped by Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood), Kirk is convinced to join Starfleet.

The film moves forward again, with a distress call coming from Vulcan. The cadets warp to their aid, only to discover things are not what they seem.

The film has everything that makes the Star Trek films so enjoyable, fascinating science-fiction, great action, and humor. J.J. Abrams cast the film perfectly, with Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as the perfect Kirk and Spock. The rest of the cast is excellent as well, Karl Urban makes an awesome McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Uhura. The film is funny without parody, and while I know some more hardcore fans were worried at some of the action sequences, I felt that the film in no way alienated (no pun intended) long time fans.

People are calling this the first ‘Star Trek’ film for everyone, I would have to agree with that, it most definitely is. Long-time fans will enjoy the nods to Trek’s past, and I think there is enough here to invite a whole new generation of Trekkies.
