10 “Best Picture” Nominees?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced that starting next year, there will be 10 nominees for best picture.  Academy president Sid Ganis said the move was made to allow for more movies that might have slipped past unnoticed in past years.  (One only need to look to last year when both “The Dark Knight,” and “Wall-E,” were hailed by critics and fans alike, but both ended up without a best picture nomination.

If one were cynical, one could say that this was simply a desperate effort to try and boost TV ratings for the awards.

Ganis pointed out that 70 years ago, 10 nominees was the norm as well.  The last time it happened was in 1940, when “Casablanca,” won the top prize.
