Spielberg To Tackle Next Michael Crichton Novel

Dreamworks has announced that Steven Spielberg is developing a movie based on Michael Crichton’s next novel.  “Pirate Latitudes.”  “Latitudes,” is the first of reportedly several posthumous Crichtion novels to be published.  (The book comes out in November.)

David Koepp, (screenwriter for “Jurassic Park,” “War of the Worlds,” and, um, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

Of course, Spielberg and Crichton joined forces for “Jurassic Park,” and “The Lost World,” which worked out pretty well.

I’m thinking the “Pirates of the Caribbean,” movies may have both increased interest in pirate movies while at the same time, burned off that interest as quickly as possible.  Plus, Spielberg won’t be taking a wink-and-a-smile approach to the pirate movie, I’m guessing.  All of that said, if we’ve learned nothing in the past few months, it’s that Spielberg attaches himself to a lot of crap and very little of it ever gets made.  That Matt Helm movie?  Harvey?  And what about Abe Lincoln?  Wake me when shooting starts…
