Academy Awards Announce Oscar Documentary Short List

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced the short list of movies up for possible nomination in the ‘best documentary’ category.  The short list includes the following films:

“The Beaches of Agnes”

“Burma VJ”

“The Cove”

“Every Little Step”

“Facing Ali”

“Food Inc.”

“Garbage Emergency”

“The Most Dangerous Man in Africa”

“Mugabe and the White African”

“Sergio”

“Soundtrack For a Revolution”

“Under Our Skin”

“Valentino: The Last Emperor”

“Which Way Home”

There are a bunch of really good movies in this list, and several that I would consider some of the best of the year.  However, there are a few notable exceptions.  “Anvil! The Story of Anvil,” “Tyson,” “Capitalism: A Love Story,” and “Michael Jackson: This Is It,” all did not make the list.  Either this is a great insight, (especially in the case of “Anvil,” if you ask me,) or they’re saving at least one of these movies to nominate them for Best Picture.

You might recall that the Best Picture category has been expanded this year to include 10 nominees.
