It’s no shocker to anyone that ‘Wall-E’ shined at the box office this weekend. The film, received to major critical acclaim grossed $62.5 million from 3,992 runs. It’s competition, ‘Wanted’ an R-rated film brought in $51.5 million.
‘Wall-E’s performance was the second best June opening of all time, as well as the best opening for any Pixar film ever. ‘Wanted’ performance was the best opening for an R-rated film in June, and sixth best for all time for an R-rated film. And just like any movie that does well, Universal is eyeing a sequel to the Angelina Jolie/James McAvoy starrer.
Overall, the weekend was up 20% from last year, reflecting American’s looking for an escape from travel (gas prices), and the scorching summer heat.
‘The Love Guru’ despite a bit of controversy from star Verne Troyer’s “sex tape” leaking (sounds like publicity stunt), the film slipped 61% for a total of $5.4 million, totaling $25.3 for the first 1- days.
Get Smart held strong, with a 48% decline, bringing in $20 mil for the weekend, falling in third place. ‘Kung Fu Panda,’ came in at 4th.
