Sam Mendes to Helm 007 #23?

Rumors are flying around on-line about Sam Mendes signing on to direct Daniel Craig in the next James Bond movie.  Some sites have Mendes directing, others have him coming on to consult while MGM pleads with him to consider directing.

Either way, I think this is excellent news.  What worked best about “Casino Royale,” (“Quantum of Solace” was kinda a non-starter,) was the attention paid to the character.  Hopefully with a script by “The Queen,” and “Frost/Nixon” writer Peter Morgan, (along with Neal Purvis and Robert Wade,) will get things back on track.  And adding Mendes to the project, in any fashion, would be a huge step in the right direction.

Mendes Signs Focus Features Deal

Focus Features has signed a two-year first look deal with Sam Mendes and his company Neal Street Productions. The deal also brings two projects that Mendes has been developing as potential directing vehicles.

The first is ‘Butcher’s Crossing,’ a revisionist Western novel by John Williams, the film takes place in the 1870s, focusing on a man who goes west, and looks to hunt one of the last great buffalo herds.

Also in the deal is an adaptation of the George Eliot novel ‘Middlemarch,’ another period film.

“Away We Go” Trailer Released

The trailer for Sam Mendes’ new movie, “Away We Go,” has been released.

“Away,” stars John Kransinski and Maya Rudolph.  The story is about a couple about to have their first baby who travel around the US, trying to find the perfect place for their child to be born.

The supporting cast is also excellent with Cheryl Hines, Jim Gaffigan, Maggie Gyllenhal, Allison Janney, and Catherine O’Hara all in the film.  The script was written by novelists and editors Dave Eggers and his wife Vendela Vida.

Everything about this move ingrigues me.  The cast, the directing, and especially the script.  Check out the trailer here.  “Away We Go,” comes out June 5th.

Toni Collette Steps In

Toni Collette will be joining Sam Mendes’ untitled relationship comedy set to begin shooting in CT this month. The film, also starring John Krasinski, Maya Rudolph, and Cheryl Hines, is about a couple who is expecting their first child traveling around the U.S. in order to find a perfect place to start their family.

Sam Mendes’ next film, Revolutionary Road comes out December 2008.
