Ridley Scott to Direct ‘Alien’ Prequel

Ridley Scott to Direct ‘Alien’ Prequel

alienIt makes me ridiculously happy to report this. Ridley Scott is returning to the Alien franchise as director.

20th Century Fox has hired scribe Jon Spaihts to write a prequel to the 1979 film that Ridley Scott directed. The film tells the story of a commercial towing ship that responds to a distress signal from a nearby planet. They discover too late that the signal was coming from an empty ship was actually a warning.

There have been three sequels since the original Alien, and it was the pitch for an Alien reboot by Spaihts that got Scott interested in the project.

I cannot wait.

Scott’s “Robin Hood” To Release May 2010

Ridley Scott’s new movie, “Robin Hood,” is set for release May 24th, 2010.

This now completely fills the month of May with high-profile releases.  (The other films include “Shrek 4,” “Prince of Persia,” and, um, oh yeah,”Iron Man 2.”

“Hood” stars Russell Crows as Robin Hood and Cate Blanchett as Maid Marian.  The two most recent historical films that Scott’s done have been “Gladitor,” and “Kingdom of Heaven.”  Hope this one leans more towards “Gladiator,” instead of “Kingdom of Heaven.”

Body of Lies

Now I say this with the utmost respect. I sometimes feel like there are two different types of Ridley Scott films. There are the Ridley Scott films that I feel like he feels very passionate about (Gladiator), then there are ones that he might feel passionate about, but the evidence isn’t clear in the final product (Kingdom of Heaven). This is how I feel about ‘Body of Lies.’

Carnahan Tackles “A-Team”

Carnahan Tackles “A-Team”

Director Joe Carnahan, (best known for the wonderful “Narc,” and the underwhelming “Smokin’ Aces,”) is reportedly teaming with producers Ridley and Tony Scott on the big scren version of the 1980’s hit TV show, “The A-Team.”  John Singleton just left the project, making room for Carnahan to come in and take over.

Hopefully this will actually turn into something.  I’m not totally excited by it, but since the two Carnahan projects I was really excited for, (“Killing Pablo,” and “White Jazz,”) well, I’ll take what I can get.  -Sam

Ridley Scott Signs For Monolopy Adaptation

Ridley Scott Signs For Monolopy Adaptation

monopolyman.jpg

Director Ridley Scott has signed to adapt the popular board game Monolopy for the big screen.  Pamela Pettler, the author of such scripts as ‘The Corpse Bride,’ and ‘Monster House.’

Here’s what Scott said about the movie to the LA Times last year:  ‘So it’s really finding the universe for that game. Because clearly it ought to be humorous and for the family — the funny way it brings out, particularly when your uncle suddenly gets Park Lane and — in England, we have Park Lane, Mayfair and Barclay Square, what’s it in America? Park and Madison? So you watch people change. You’re witness to Jekyll and Hyde. Somewhere in that is a hysterically amusing and I think rather exciting film.’

I have no idea what that means.

All I can say is, thank God someone is doing this.  I can’t tell you the number of times that I’ve played the game, landed on ‘Go to Jail, go directly to jail, do not pass go, do not collect $200,’ and thought, ‘Why isn’t this a movie already?’

Sigourney Weaver Talks ‘Alien’

It’s been quite a while since there has been any serious talk of a new Alien movie (put the Alien vs. Predator films aside). The true fan base would love to see Sigourney Weaver return in her iconic role of Ripley, wouldn’t we?

Weaver told OK Magazine that if she had a director like Ridley Scott (Ridley, or is just ‘like’ Ridley enough?) she would definitely do another. Regarding her age, Weaver told the mag, “I’m not going to start apologizing. Sophia Loren is my inspiration. She is a woman who has never apologized for being herself.”

For those of you who saw WALL-E and heard a familiar voice over the PA on the space ship, that was Weaver. Personally, if Ridley were to take the reigns of the franchise he started, I’d have a hard time not being excited.

DVD Review: American Gangster

DVD Review: American Gangster

It seems that if you are a working filmmaker in America these days, at some point, you will make a mob movie. It’s Ridley Scott’s turn and his effort is ‘American Gangster,’ starring Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe.

Sienna Miller Goes to ‘Nottingham’

Sienna Miller Goes to ‘Nottingham’

Sienna MillerSienna Miller has signed on to star with Russell  Crowe in ‘Nottingham’ a new revisionist take on the tale of Robin Hood. Miller will star as Maid Marion in a story that focuses on the Sherrif of Nottingham (Crowe) as a lawman who works under a corrupt king, and engages in a love triangle with Marion and Robin Hood.

The film will start shooting late summer, and will be directed by Ridley Scott. The film has been scheduled for a November 6, 2009 release.

I was skeptical of this until I read the part where Ridley Scott would be directing. I love when Scott and Crowe team up, and I love Scott’s period epics, this could end up being a very entertaining film.

Affleck & Scott ‘Kind One’s’

Ridley Scott has signed on to direct and produce “The Kind One,” starring Casey Affleck.

Set in the 1930s, the film tells the story of an amnesiac who finds himself working for a mobster. A murderous thug named “the Kind One,” Affleck’s character falls in love with the “Kind One’s” girlfriend.

The film is also being produced by Jules Daly (The Assassination of Jesse James), and Sean Bailey (Gone Baby Gone).

The story of the film sounds excellent, I’m a big fan of both Ridley Scott and Casey Affleck. Affleck especially has been showing a lot of chops lately, ‘Jesse James,’ was probably one of my favorite movies of last year.
