“Sherlock Holmes” Trailer Released

Is it just me, or does this look good?

I used to be a fan of Guy Ritchie, loving both “Lock, Stock,” and “Snatch,” but felt he kind of lost the plot with “Swept Away,” and “Revolver.”  I haven’t even bothered seeing “Rocknrolla,” but I’m sure I will at some point.  So the idea of letting Ritchie tackle the Sherlock Holmes series scared me.

But then the cast was named.  Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams.  I mean, no matter what movie you’re making, that’s a pretty good cast.  And now here’s the trailer.  And it looks good.  There are a few moments that have me worried, but that could just be how the trailer is cut.  Overall, it looks really good.  Like ‘movie I’d want to see in a theater’ good.  Who knew?

Check out the trailer yourself and see if you have the same reaction.  The trailer is currently posted here.

Garry Shandling In “Iron Man 2”?

Garry Shandling In “Iron Man 2”?

As “Iron Man 2,” got underway shooting yesterday, we got the first look at Robert Downey Jr., and Don Cheadle in the movie.  They’re both wearing suits, so it’s not the most exciting of photos.  However, IESB is reporting that comedian Garry Shandling will play a part in the new movie.  Reportedly, Shandling shows up as an annoying invesgative reporter in a continuation of the “I am Iron Man,” sequence that ended the first film.

Also, director Jon Favreau is on Twitter, so you can follow his updates from set, if you so choose.  Here’s a picture of his chair that he posted yesterday:

Downey Jr. Talks “Iron Man 2” As Filming Begins

Robert Downey Jr. recently spoke with ET Online and gave a few hints about the story for the upcoming “Iron Man” sequel:

“The film is almost entirely about character, and yet we still have twice as much action as we did last time, so it’s going to be nuts. Essentially Iron Man 2 is about looking behind the armor, or the armature, of a superhero. It’s one thing to say you’re Iron Man, it’s another thing to be fully ready to do that.”

He also added that they are saving the popular “Demon in a Bottle” storyline for a future film.  Shooting begins this morning.  Yaaaaaay.

Favreau to Direct Avengers?

A scoop has hit the pages of ‘Ain’t It Cool News,’ regarding the involvement of ‘Iron Man’ director Jon Favreau with the ‘Avengers’ movie. Apparently, the explanation behind the delay of the ensemble super-hero movie from mid-20011 to May 4th 2012 is so that Favreau could take the directors seat.

Of course, as is the case with all rumors, this one is up in the air till someone confirms.

Favreau is currently gearing up to start ‘Iron Man 2,’ which will star Mickey Rourke, and of course, Robert Downey Jr.

Will An Oscar Win Land Mickey Rourke “Iron Man 2”?

Marvel Productions wants Mickey Rourke for the role of the villain in “Iron Man 2.”  However, times being what they are, they don’t want to pay Rourke’s asking price.  Now, reports are circulating that Marvel is waiting until Sunday night to make Rourke an offer.  Why Sunday night?  Because it’s the Oscars.

If Rourke picks up the best actor award for his role in “The Wrestler,” Marvel will reportedly meet his asking price.  If Rourke goes home empty handed, he also may lose the role in “Iron Man 2.”

This has happened to Rourke before.  Sylvester Stallone wanted Rourke for his remake of “Get Carter.”  Warner Bros. didn’t.  Stallone stepped up and personally paid part of Rourke’s salary to guarantee he would be in the movie.  (Not that it helped the movie.)  Will that happen again?  Will Robert Downey Jr., Gwenyth Paltrow and Jon Favreau dig deep to land Rourke?  I guess we’ll have to wait until Sunday.

Here’s Holmes’ Irene Adler

Here’s Holmes’ Irene Adler

USA Today has published the first picture of Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler in Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes movie.  Of course, the movie also stars Jude Law as Dr. Watson and Robert Downey Jr. as Holmes.  The Adler character first made her appearance in the Holmes stories in “A Scandal in Bohemia,” but I’ve read that the movie will be a new Holmes adventure which alternatingly fills me with excitement and dread.  (I mean, Ritchie did unleash both “Swept Away” and “Revolver” on an unsuspecting public.)

No matter, the presence of Messrs. Downey Jr. and Law make me sleep a little easier at night.  -Sam

DVD Review: Tropic Thunder

DVD Review: Tropic Thunder

Ben Stiller’s second directorial effort is a kitchen-sink affair, no joke is to low, no explosion is too big. Sending up actors and their craft, as well as the ridiculousness seemingly inherent in filmmaking, ‘Tropic Thunder,’ is an assault on the senses that, at the same time, is kinda boring in some spots. Downey Jr, Cheadle and Favreau Sign for ‘Avengers’

The much discussed adaptation of the popular comic book seris ‘Avengers,’ is looking like it’s a go project.

Robert Downey Jr. will be playing the part of Tony Stark/Iron Man, and Don Cheadle will be taking over the role of Jim Rhodes from Terence Howard.  Favreau will be exec. producing, but one can assume that he’s also being considered to direct.

The press release gives this idea as what the plot might be: ”The Avengers’, will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they’ve ever faced.’

‘Iron Man 2’ is scheduled to open May 11, 2010, while the ‘Avengers’ movie is planned for a summer 2011 release.

First Look at Downey as Holmes

First Look at Downey as Holmes

The first pictures of Robert Downey Jr. playing Sherlock Holmes have surfaced on-line.  Holmes one of the most portrayed character on-film with the role already being inhabited by Basil Rathbone, Michael Caine, Jonathan Pryce, Rupert Everett, Christopher Lee, Charlton Heston, Peter O’Toole and Jeremy Brett

The web-site, Just Jared, has posted a good number of the pictures.  When asked about the role and the movie, Downey said, ‘Clearly I’m going to do it better than it’s ever been done. The more I read about it the more overwhelmed I was by the weight of it and the amount of people who will be watching to see if it’s gotten right.’

Even though the film is directed by Guy Ritchie, who has been on a bit of a professional roller coaster as of late, I’m intrigued to see what this turns into.  On top of Downey playing Holmes, Jude Law will be appearing in the film as good friend Dr. John Watson.
